PlayStation 5 Can Record Voice Chats At User Discretion For Moderation Purposes

PlayStation 5

Et tu, Brute? Then fall, Caesar!

The recent PS4 update (8.00) has connotations for the PlayStation 5. Because the update contains a feature in testing for the quattro‘s successor. Namely, the ability for users to record voice chats for the purposes of turning them in for moderation purposes.

Since everyone’s been significantly confused by the wording of the message, “voice chats may be recorded for moderation” (not helped by every journalist other than apparently me being sensationalist about it), Sony has clarified that they are not recording voice chats independent of users’ consent. Rather, the feature allows users to choose to record these chats and turn them in for moderation purposes.

Per the PlayStation blog:

Following this update, users are seeing a notification about Party Safety and that voice chats in parties may be recorded. Voice chat recording for moderation is a feature that will be available on PS5 when it launches, and will enable users to record their voice chats on PS5 and submit them for moderation review. The pop up you’re seeing on PS4 right now is to let you know that when you participate in a chat with a PS5 user (post-launch), they may submit those recordings from their PS5 console to SIE.

So, you can put away your pitchforks and your copies of 1984. They’re not recording you. But how well do you know that buddy of yours? Hope you know them well, especially if you toss around those gamer words…

As an aside, the 8.00 update has been causing some performance issues on the PS4. No word on when these issues will be addressed, but hopefully it’s soon.
