PlatinumGames Really Wants Xbox To Reconsider Scalebound

Scalebound

Just let ’em do it, Phil.

Way back at the beginning of the Xbox One’s lifecycle, Scalebound was announced. It was a game to be made for the system by action gods PlatinumGames. But, in 2017, Xbox decided to cancel the project.

The thing is, PlatinumGames hasn’t given up on the project some day seeing light. To the point where, in a chat with IGN, THE Hideki Kamiya said:

I’d like to appeal to Phil Spencer directly! Let’s do it, Phil!

PlatinumGames president Atsushi Inaba backs that up, as well.

Often in an interview you might hear a developer politely saying, ‘Yes, if we had the opportunity we’d love to work on that again’, but we don’t mean it that way. Both Kamiya and I are serious – we really would love to work on Scalebound again. I’d like to discuss it with Microsoft properly.

At which point, Kamiya chipped in:

Development had progressed a fair way, and it seems pointless for Microsoft to just hold on to that and not do anything with it.

[He then said in English]: Phil! Phil! Let’s do it together!

And, aside from the fact that both of them are highly enthused about bringing Scalebound back to life, Inaba’s quote holds the reason for these appeals. Xbox owns the IP. That means that they’ve got the reins on the whole thing, and if they’re not going to play ball, the talented folks at PlatinumGames are left with the bluest of balls.

Realistically, Phil Spencer should want it. The past few years have seen Xbox, as a brand, doing everything possible to build up their stable, both of developers and IPs. Sitting on Scalebound, frankly, goes against that. But there’s no telling what, exactly the deal is, so it’s too soon to go in hard on any assumption. That said, PlatinumGames ain’t no slouch. If they say they want it, they can definitely deliver.
