Payday 2 on Nintendo Switch will be an Outdated Build

Payday 2

Might not be that bad, really.

There’s been some buzz going on in regards to the Nintendo Switch version of Payday 2. Due to the fact that its EU release date is, well, today, some (streamers and the like, mostly) got advance copies. And Reddit has been atwitter due to the state of the game.

Footage from YouTuber Nolifer of the game sparked an investigation into what update the Switch version was running. Some Redditors noted elements, such as the UI, that pointed to the game running on update 124. Others disagreed, thinking it was update 131. They eventually came to the decision that the game was running on update 117.

In an interview with Polygon, Starbreeze, the game’s publisher, confirmed that the Switch version is running an older version. Specifically, the Most Wanted update, which came out June last year. To put this in perspective, both the PS4 and Xbox One versions are running the Master Plan update (released late 2017), which is still behind the PC version, but not so far behind. According to the interview:

The reasoning for the Switch content: we’re making continuous updates to a game that’s turning 5 years old this year, and to get the game out in early 2018 on Switch meant that our team had to go with the content ported and available at the time of console submission […] The PS4 and Xbox One versions are now almost up to par with PC content, and Switch is close behind those versions. There are future content updates planned for Switch, as well.

While the Switch is very close to a year behind the PC version, it does come with some exclusive content, which hopefully makes up for that. And the publisher plans to bring it in line with the other console versions sooner rather than later. They’re mostly putting an emphasis on getting it ready. While you might not be enthused about how they’re going about it, it’s probably a necessity for OVERKILL (Payday 2’s developer). Not to mention that it’ll still run better on Switch out of the box than on mid-range PC’s sans-mods.

Payday 2 launches on the Switch today in Europe, and on the 27th in North America. And now you can take your heisting on the run.
