It would’ve been 30% better if he just wore the goddamn helmet.
In a move that should surprise absolutely no one, Paramount has decided not to renew the Halo TV Series for their streaming platform, Paramount+.
From a statement made to The Hollywood Reporter:
We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.
343 Industries said the following to THR on the cancellation:
We deeply appreciate the millions of fans who propelled the Halo series to be a global success, and we remain committed to broadening the Halo universe in different ways in the future. We are grateful to Amblin and Paramount for their partnership in bringing our expansive sci-fi universe to viewers around the world.
It is, however, worth noting that 343, Xbox, and Amblin Television are not giving up. They plan to shop the series around to other platforms, in the hopes one of them will snatch up the series.
The series was in the works for a fairly long time, with development starting way back in 2013. The first season, which was helmed by Kyle Killen and Steven Kane, didn’t start filming until 2019, with a launch in 2022. The second season saw David Wiener taking over, with that second season launching in March of this year.
Personal opinion based on the first season, it was fine when it stuck to what you’d expect from Halo. Unfortunately, it spent such a large amount of its runtime not doing anything of the sort (and pissing off fans that were actually concerned with the lore) that it wound up not being a very good watch. And I say that as someone who isn’t a Halo fan.
While the second season supposedly made some adjustments, the viewership was apparently not good enough to satisfy Paramount’s expectations. As to whether a competing platform will roll the dice on a third season, who’s to say?
