Overwatch getting “Play of the Game 2.0” overhaul to reward good plays and not just kill streaks

“It’s high no…ot anymore!”

Overwatch is a lovely game, but since its release the running joke has been that that gatling gun wielding Bastion is the only character to get the play of the game. That’s not quite true, but the feature does seem to favor killing lots of enemies in rapid succession.

The people working on Overwatch seem to know this is an issue and are working to overhaul the Play of the Game system to feature good plays instead of just lots of kills.

Geoff Goodman, Overwatch lead hero designer speaking to Kotaku stated that “There’s a plan to do what we’re calling Play of the Game 2.0.”

“We have a lot of really cool ideas. We want to do a lot with the camera work. We have ideas for cooperative Play of the Games. We want to highlight the combo play itself, to show both.”

The have been looking to make these alteration for some time now, but even then it might be a while before these changes go into effect. Goodman would address this by saying,

“It’s been on the books for a little while. It’s just a matter of prioritizing everything. There’s some tricky things there, like how do we handle Play of the Game intros, and how do we decide who gets credit.”
