Overwatch 2 Canceled Hero Mode, Only To Turn Around And Sell PvE Campaigns For $15 Each

Overwatch 2

Also, Sojourn is still broken.

Yes, it’s true. Just a month after killing off Hero Mode, the PvE mode that allowed you to customize characters and missions and experience a story, Blizzard has announced that those PvE missions they also teased are finally coming. And each one is going to cost you $15.

August 10th will see the beginning of Season 6 of Overwatch 2, with the season being named Invasion. And if you buy the Invasion Bundle, you’ll get the three story missions, as well as some other stuff. It’s important to note that this is nothing like the aforementioned Hero Mode; these missions more closely resemble the seasonal PvE events they’ve done in the past, like Junkenstein or Uprising. Blizzard laid out the details via a blog post.

If you buy the Overwatch 2: Invasion Bundle for $15, you get:

  • Access to the Overwatch 2: Invasion Story Missions, during the season and permanently after
  • 1,000 Overwatch Coins (equal to the Premium Battle Pass, $10 USD value)
  • A brand-new Sojourn Legendary skin ($19 USD value)
  • Permanent access to Sojourn as a playable hero for new players: unlocked upon completing Story Mission challenges.

And if you’re dumb enough to spend $40 to buy you buy the Ultimate Invasion Bundle for $40, you get all the above, as well as:

  • The Null Sector Premium Battle Pass with 20 Battle Pass skips ($30 USD value)
  • An additional 1,000 Overwatch Coins, for a total of 2,000 Overwatch Coins ($20 USD value)
  • Two additional Legendary skins for Cassidy and Kiriko ($38 USD value).

So you might already see the problem, here, in that if you want to play these missions with someone you know, they also have to purchase this DLC. What a wonderful way to roll out content for a free-to-play game that you shuttered a game people paid for upfront to justify its existence. Especially since the other justification, Hero Mode, was just canned with the excuse being that PvE was taking too many resources away from PvP development.

You know what? Fuck this game. I quit playing Overwatch 2 in February for the same reason I quit playing Overwatch 1 years ago. The shitty matchmaking driving my blood pressure to dangerous levels. Every match I’d get a bunch of dipshits and AFKing assholes; meanwhile the enemy team is the Overwatch equivalent of Seal Team 6 on steroids. Did they nerf Sojourn? no. Did they make dailies (and, let’s be honest, weeklies) reasonable by dropping or altering bullshit missions that you might not complete even after grinding away for several hours? No. Did they finish the goddamn mode that they sold this “sequel” on? No.

Frankly, I find it ridiculous that anybody is supporting this game after 2/3s of a year of absolute bullshit. Everything in this game seems to be tooled towards the eSports league. Which may or may not make for engaging footage of these top percent players, I don’t know. But what I do know is that it makes hopping on for a few casual matches to unwind into absolute goddamn sweaty misery.

Frankly, if you feel the need to play a hero shooter, Team Fortress 2 is this way.
