Our hands-on preview of Mega Man 11 at E3 2018

On the last day of E3, we finally got hands on with Mega Man 11. And it’s the first game in the series in a long time to really shake things up.

The demo only had the one already prominent stage available for play; Brick Man. And, maybe it’s not meant to be played first, or something, but it was oddly difficult.

Not in a bad way, mind, but it seemed a bit more difficult overall compared to my memories of other games in the series. Then again, you’re supposed to play Mega Man stages in the order you’re comfortable with. So demos gonna demo, I guess.

The Double Gear mechanic was front and center. In all honesty, I found the speed gear to be the most useful in the stage. And, waiting in line, I saw a number of people ahead of me fail tasks that were obviously designed around its use.

For example, there’s a point where a crusher falls from the ceiling, forcing you to shoot and jump through a few miniature mazes on the conveyor belt floor in the area. The speed gear can give you a few more precious seconds to get through the tougher of these. But it seems I was one of the few to recognize that.

Not only is the game tight and right, it’s probably the prettiest classic series Mega Man game in, like, 20 years. You can tell that they’re going to the trouble to make the game look impressive, 2.5D side-scroller though it may be.

Sadly, I died to Brick Man in the end. But that’s often how learning a Mega Man game goes. And I sure wasn’t going to wait another 2 hours for a rematch.

But I’m certain it’ll happen someday later this year. Mega Man 11 releases on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC October 2, this year.
