Old School Runscape’s Wealthiest Player Has Been Banned, Causing Over 1 Trillion Gold To Disappear In The Blink Of An Eye

Old School Runescape

Chances are, if you play Old School Runescape, you’re familiar with BTCs. The player and streamer had recently reached the 1 trillion gold mark in September, and now, he’s been banned from the game. Jagex’s (the company that runs the game) moderators accused him of engaging in real-world trading, and rendered the ban without any room for negotiation. While OSRS gold officially has no real world value (since technically, like every other item in OSRS, it’s all owned by Jagex), on the grey market, the amount BTCs had was worth over $160,000.

As BTCs goes over in the video, he denies engaging in real-world trading on his path to 1 trillion gold. He states that his ascent was “highly monitored” by moderators and had resulted in no permanent bans until now.

Clearly I wasn’t selling any gold on the way to one trill. They mentioned these [real-world trading] instances are recent, implying that I began selling literal bits of it then, after one trill … Clearly I was not getting banned all the way up there, meaning I didn’t sell any gold. But now I’m selling, at one trill?

While he does note that he got a ban earlier this year, he was able to get that one overturned. At one point, he shows a message he got from Old School Runescape lead community manager Ayiza, which states that “this ban has been thoroughly reviewed by out anti-cheating team to be correct and the ban won’t be overturned”.

In a follow up message Aziya says:

There are very clear (and recent) instances of RWT occurring on our end. This wasn’t an overnight decision, and I’m confident the ACT have made the correct call with the evidence they have to hand.

BTCs believes that the ban was triggered by his in-game gold giveaways. They’re something that he’s always been careful with, specifically to avoid accusations of real-world trading. Three other player accounts were also chain-banned in this incident, likely because they were being used to store some of his massive, Scrooge McDuck-level gold hoard.

Regardless of the particulars of the case, BTCs has called the anti-cheat team “dumb and corrupt”. Which probably isn’t going to help things going forward. Some players are upset that BTCs was in a private conversation with the mods almost immediately after the ban; a level of support few, if any, ever really see.
