And the promise of no layoffs.
So, it’s safe to say the pandemic has been rough on a large number of workers. Essential workers are still stuck going out there, and there have been some nasty paycuts and layoffs for those deemed non-essential. But things are different at Nvidia.
As a matter of fact, Nvidia has announced that, not only will there be no layoffs at the company, they’re giving everyone a pay raise to bolster their employee’s financial security during the pandemic. Per a letter by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang:
In response to the falling economy, we announced that we are pulling in our annual review process. Immediately I received questions about whether we are also planning a layoff. NO — precisely the opposite. We are accelerating your raise to put some extra money in your hands. we can put tens of millions more dollars in the hands of our families in the coming months.
There is no layoff. The work we do in graphics, science, AI, and robotics is more vital to the future than ever.
The letter later goes on to say that they’ll be matching charitable donations up to $2,500, to a total of $10,000.
This is, overall, a great thing to see a company do. On the other hand, this is Nvidia we’re talking about; they do particularly well, even now, because the products they make are just that useful (computers are, after all, really damn important for research). It’s not exactly as feasible a measure for companies that are taking a much larger economic hit. Still, it is the sort of thing you’d like to see more of from the various companies out there.
Good on you, Nvidia.
