Nintendo is making waves with the recent announcement that it is venturing into the mobile market with the help of Dena. That’s exciting enough news to make any Nintendo fan happy, but the news does not stop there. Nintendo, during a press conference regarding the Dena merger, was quick to point out that the house that Mario built will not be leaving the hardware market behind in favor of mobile.
Satoru Iwata said the following,
“Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices, but it is not because we have lost our passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems . On the contrary, because now we have decided on how we will make use of smart devices, we have come to hold an even stronger passion and vision for the dedicated video game system business than before.”
He went on to to make a huge announcement regarding Nintendo’s next piece of hardware,
“As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business… Let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development codename ‘NX’.”
All we have at this point is a name, the “NX” like the Enterprise from the much underrated Star Trek series. Iwata would only elaborate that we would get more news on “NX” sometime next year.
I know many people out there are thinking this could be the successor to the Wii U, but it should be noted that Nintendo used the phrasing “brand new concept” which could mean anything. Granted the Wii and Wii U were both new concepts, but all we can do now is wait and see.
