Nintendo Takes Aim At YouTube Game Music Channels

Game over, man! Game over!

Well, it seems Nintendo has finally decided to crack down on the various game music channels on YouTube that upload Nintendo music. Specifically, the most recent casualty was a big one.

GilvaSunner was their target. And this time, they really turned the screws. The launched over 100 claims against the videos on the channel, going in order from most popular to least.

They didn’t just stop there, either. They continued on to claim many more; to a total of 115.

This is far from the first time GilvaSunner has dealt with copyright claims on his channel. And it’s certainly not the first time Nintendo’s done it, either. Back in May, much the same happened to the channel BrawlBRSTMs3, known for their prominent videos of the Super Smash Bros. series soundtracks. They initially removed all Nintendo content from the channel, before finally throwing in the towel completely a day ago.

6 years ago today, we lost BrawlBRSTMs5 and moved to BRSTMs3. We had coincidentally planned to shut down the site today, effectively halting all uploads of extensions. However, the channel happened to be terminated today.

Today’s termination was unexpected, but we knew it would eventually happen. I am unable to see who issued the final strike on the channel. There is no confirmation on the issuer, and frankly it’s not all that important.

I’ve mentioned this before very sternly, but sharing music owned by other entities can yield repercussions. Part of the reason for our voluntary shutdown is out of respect for the copyright owners of all music we’ve shared. I know most of our fanbase understands this already.

The site and channel have taken a far backseat in our lives in recent years. We have found new priorities and interests in life – this is only natural. It’s not feasible to maintain a site that isn’t a priority to us.

I’d like to hope we built a huge fanbase on behalf of video game music composers, as well as assembling talented contributors to the site and channel. I hope you’ve learned a lot about other composers through our uploads.

We’ve also made it simpler for people to mod music in Gamecube, Wii, 3DS, Wii U, Switch, Dreamcast, and more games with the large pool of audio formats that were available. Please use VGAudio to convert BRSTM to other formats, as well as creating all of these formats from WAV.

If anyone that has uploaded to our site would like their personal uploads, please send an email to [email protected] with your username, preferably from the email address you used to register on the site.

Thank you all for your contributions and support over the past 9 years. You’ve all made it very fun, and I hope you’ve enjoyed our favorite uploads. Take care of yourselves, and each other.

I want to be clear in stating that we will not be creating another YouTube channel. YouTubeチャンネルを作り直しませんよ。

On the one hand, it is Nintendo’s right to do this. They are legally required to protect their copyright; that’s why all those fan games die all the time. On the other hand, having dabble in them, Nintendo basically never releases the soundtracks of their games outside Japan. And they’re usually oddly expensive to import, as well. It’s almost like they’re passing up an incredible opportunity to do things in the most straightforward way possible…
