It’s been a while since we had any info on the Switch’s online features. Well, Nintendo has finally broken their silence on the matter, pretty much confirming everything we’d heard before.
The pricing is the same as stated before ($20 per year, with less immediately expensive 1-and-3 month plans) but they’re also throwing in the NES VC with it. They’ve even sweetened the pot a bit since last discussed, as they’re also throwing in Save Data Cloud Backup into the mix.
The VC announcement also had a few surprises. For one, the service will launch with 20 games (including: Soccer, Tennis, Donkey Kong™, Mario Bros.™, Super Mario Bros.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™, Dr. Mario™, The Legend of Zelda™, and Super Mario Bros.™ 3), with more to come. The interesting thing is that they’ll all be able to be played in single- and multi-player online.
With online play added to every classic game, you can compete (or cooperate) online with friends, share your screen, or pass the controller, depending on the game. With the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, you can also voice chat during your play sessions.
It’s also worth noting that the Online subscription will be necessary starting September this year (the service’s launch) for games with an online element, like Splatoon 2 or MarioKart 8 Deluxe. While the details are sparse now, we should learn more come E3.
