The Gamecube was a lovely little system. Hell, it was so lovely that Nintendo just shoved the thing into a thinner box, added some motion controls and called it a new system.
While I poke fun, the little box with a built-in handle had some great first-party titles and fans have been joping that those games would show up on the Virtual Console.
The Wii U wasn’t everything everyone hoped, but it was powerful enough to run a Gamecube emulator. Sure, the built-in storage made having more than a couple GC titles impossible, the thing could probably handle it.
Now we are getting reports from Eurogamer that state the upcoming Nintendo Switch will be adding the Gamecube to its Virtual Console section. The idea of that if great, but knowing that you’ll be able to load up some GC titles and play them on a portable just tickles me silly.
The GC emulation support is reportedly being handled by the same team that worked on the massively popular NES Mini. Say what you will about the availability of the Mini (Nintendo is terrible with this) the emulation is as perfect as it can get. And while the GC is more difficult, who better to handle emulation than a team from Nintendo themselves.
Nintendo never has been a console associated with eSports like the Xbox and PlayStation, even though Smash is huge, but the first major trailer seems to be pushing that idea. With Melee being an eSports staple even before that term was everywhere, having GC support on the Switch means an already established eSports user base.
Who knows where this goes as I was always one pushing the Wii U to get on the MOBA scene because of the perfect Wii U Gamepad.
