Nintendo Shows Off Its Next Console The Nintendo Switch

It’s hard to keep secrets from the internet, especially in 2016. But even in a world where even leaks have leaks, Nintendo has kept a tight lid on their next video game console, the Nintendo NX. Getting information from Nintendo about the device is probably just as difficult as breaking into Fort Knox.

Nintendo has finally broken their radio silence and given us the first trailer for their console, and it sure is something. Never one to shy away from taking risks (something missing in the incredibly low-end PC like offerings from the major home consoles) Nintendo pulls out the Nintendo Switch!

The extended trailer shows of something wildly different from what’s on the market today. As expected the now title “Switch” lets you switch from home console gaming into portable gaming whenever you want. The console (which is powered by a custom Tegra processor) works exactly like a normal home console, but when you have to take your game on the go the Nintendo Switch turns into what is essentially a tablet.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

NVIDIA, the people behind the Tegra technology talked about the processor used in the Nintendo Switch saying, “The high-efficiency scalable processor includes a NVIDIA GPU based on the same architecture as the world’s top-performing GeForce gaming graphics cards.”

There are a lot of questions left unanswered with the Switch. Most notably the price point and launch game lineup. The trailer does give us a few clues into the games we can probably expect on launch seeing clips of the Skyrim: Definitive Edition, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, NBA 2K17, and what may be enhanced versions of both Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon.

Nintendo may be looking to consolidate their home and portable offering with the Nintendo Switch, but only time will tell if this device takes off when it launches March of 2017.
