It starts.
Normally with the Nintendo Switch Online service, you expect a more is more approach (despite the fact that I’m pretty sure it still has less than the Wii Virtual Console had when it ended service). But today, that’s not the case, at least for the Japanese side of the service. And so, we must pour one out for our good friend, Spike Chunsoft’s Super Formation Soccer.
“Super Formation Soccer” (Spike Chunsoft), a title included on “Super Famicom Nintendo Switch Online,” will cease distribution at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2025. Once distribution ends, even those who have already downloaded Super Famicom Nintendo Switch Online will no longer be able to use it.
The game isn’t yet gone from the service, but it will be gone as of March 28th. Which, at the very least, gives users roughly a month to say goodbye to what may have been one of their childhood games.
As for why, Spike Chunsoft is owned by Kadokawa. So it’s likely a matter of the license expiring and no one wanting to commit to re-upping it.
Needless to say, though, (English speaking) commentors under Nintendo’s Japanese post on the matter have pulled no punches.
Nonetheless, this does really highlight why the “Netflix of Games” thing has always been a bad idea. And, naturally, this is the first of what will likely be many. You see this happen all the time in digital stores, so it’s foolish to think it won’t happen to a floating “archive” of games you have digital access to.
