Nintendo PlayStation Prototype Crests $200k In Bids

Nintendo PlayStation

Well, someone’s playing with power, alright.

So, chances are you know of it, but if you don’t, here’s a crash course: once upon a time, Nintendo had a deal with Sony to produce a CD add-on for the Super Famicom/SNES to compete with Sega’s Genesis Addons. Nintendo decided to kill this deal, however, in favor of one with Phillips. Which worked out really well for them.

Okay, so their side of the deal never panned out and Phillips got to produce that shit without Big N’s oversight. And Sony decided to take what they’d made for the deal and rework it as a standalone, rising to prominence in the gaming sphere the very next generation.

Anyway, it was found out a few years back that there were prototype units made for the project’s original add-on purpose. Some scant 200 were made, and one has popped up in the intervening years. This one, in particular, is now being auctioned off, with bids already surpassing $200,000. The owners, who acquired the device in a bankruptcy auction which included a number of items formerly belonging to ex-Sony CEO Olaf Olafsson, have decided to let the market decide the prototype’s value; they’ve stated that they’ve already turned down an offer to buy it outright for $1.2 million.

As for who would bid over $200k for it, though? Well, Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey tweeted that he’s one of the top bidders, and will probably remain so.

We don’t yet know the owner’s reserve price. But that will change on the 27th, which is when all that juicy info gets revealed. The live bidding will start on March 6th.
