A testing of the waters, probably.
It’s been over 20 years since the Virtual Boy was released. And now, Nintendo plans to go for VR again. Only this time, it won’t be in black and red with the possibility of making you go blind.
And this time, it’ll be made from cardboard. Nintendo announced the Nintendo Labo: VR Kit, which will allow users to build a VR headset out of cardboard. The set will run $80, but it won’t exactly let you play Breath of the Wild in glorious stereoscopy.
Rather, the set will allow you to play your choice of 6 games, each with their own cardboard peripherals, made for it.

- Toy-Con Bird
- Toy-Con Wind Pedal
- Toy-Con Elephant
Not to mention one for the headset alone. That said, while the core of the headset is made of plastic, it’s hard not to imagine that, with close contact to someone’s face, the headset will eventually get kind of gross. Still, Google Cardboard is the most populous VR headset in the world, and it’s still around, so maybe I’m wrong.
While the full kit will run you $80, it’s not your only option. There is a base kit which includes the headset and Blaster Toy-Con for $40. The add-ons, split into 2 separate kits, will run $20 each.
Either way, Nintendo Labo: VR Kit as well as its associated add-ons launches April 12th.
