Nintendo Account Holders Should Secure Their Accounts, Says Nintendo

It seems to be a constant thing nowadays; a major service provider getting hacked, and having a number of accounts exposed. In this case, it’s Nintendo.

Recently, people have been noticing that their Nintendo accounts have been hacked. In some cases, thes account holders have been distressed to find that they’ve had hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars worth of digital purchases charged to a linked Paypal or credit card.

As such, it’ probably a good idea to secure your account. Nintendo themselves recommend engaging two-factor verification.

The hack attacks on Nintendo’s platform are not just a recent thing. They’ve been going on for months; though things have increased in intensity recent of late.

The crux of the real issue, though, is that it’s not just games that are available through the Nintendo Switch’s eshop. They also sell digital currency for a number of online games; exempli gratia: Fortnite’s V-bucks. And, per ZDNet, these hackers are then selling these essentially pilfered digital currencies online.

It’s also important to note that these accounts are not being hacked in the usual way. Many of those affected have stated that they used unique, complex, randomly generated passwords for their account. Meaning that the usual brute-forcing methods, or testing if a password that was leaked in a separate breach has been reused,aren’t the culprits

Some have speculated that the issue s related to the linking of Nintendo’s older NNID system into the modern Nintendo Account:

So it’s probably a good idea to get on enabling two-factor verification. Especially if you have something like a Paypal or credit card linked to your Nintendo account.
