Niantic Begs Pokémon GO Players To Avoid Las Vegas Park If They Don’t Have $30 Pass

Pokémon GO… somewhere else!

Recently, Pokémon GO developers Niantic begged players to avoid Las Vegas’ Sunset Park (which is, BTW a public park) unless they had bought a $30 pass for the event they were holding there.

The event in question was the Pokémon GO Tour: Hoenn, which took place February 18th-19th. The pass for the event was $25 pre-New-Year’s and $30 after. It allowed passholders to engage in a number of Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire-themed events in-game.

17,000 players that did not have that pass descended on the park anyway, likely in the errant belief that they could still, somehow, get into the event. And like every other Pokémon GO event ever, the influx of players overtaxed the cell towers, causing connection issues. Which naturally caused many players to be unable to enjoy the content they paid for.

Niantic tweeted about this excess playerbase in the park. And followed up with a tweet asking those not participating in the event to stay away so as to avoid ruining the event for everyone.

This went about as well as you’d expect. As a means of recompense for the players affected by the connection issues, they extended the timers on events throughout the city, as well as sent each of them a bundle containing three premium and remote raid passes.
