New Steam app will let your stream games to mobiles and TV without a Steam Link

And here I just bought a Steam Link for $5 when it was on sale earlier this year. We figured they were cleaning out old stock for something new.

Valve has been busy behind the scenes. The company just announced a new Steam app that will let Steam user stream their entire library to a phone, tablet, and television.  It can do this without the need of any special hardware.

The new app will be compatible with Android and Apple devices. This new Steam Link app is exactly what it sounds like. The folks at Valve have taken all the guts from the Steam Link device and crammed it into an app; somehow.

Okay, so you actually still need a device in some respects. Players will be able to connect an Android-powered television or Apple TV box to the host computer so you can stream all your games. This also works for both iOS and Android phones and tablets.

As you’ll be streaming some big games, you’ll need a 5GHz wi-fi connection, but a wired network will work best much like the older Steam Link device. And because you are streaming to Android-powered televisions or iOS compatible devices, you’ll be able to use all manner of controllers.

But that’s not all folks! Vavle also has another app they are dubbing the Steam Video app that will do everything the Steam Link app does only for the video content that Steam now sells. You’ll forgive me if I forgot Steam was selling videos.

Not sure why one single app can;t do both, but I’m sure it has something to do with licenses or something. The Steam Link app launches on May 21st, while the Steam Video app will drop sometime this summer.
