New Star Fox Release Will Take Advantage of Super FX 3 Chip, Have Rumble Support

Big things afoot.

If you’re into the SNES, some big things have been happening of late. Notably, Limited Run is working on a new version of the SNES port of Doom with that port’s original developer, @RandalLinden. Th9is port will offer improved performance, better controls, and even Rumble support, which will come through a new controller offered by the company.

This is all thanks to the Super FX 3 chip developed by Linden. The chip is an unofficial iteration of the chip, developed by Argonaut, responsible for making 3D possible on the SNEs back in the 90’s.

The natural question everyone was asking was whether other Super FX games would be able to benefit from the chip.

The answer to that question, coincidentally, is yes.

For those not in the know, Star Fox EX is a romhack that brings a number of quality of life improvements to the original SNES game. That said, until now, it was not something that could run on original hardware. Now, with a hardware update from Linden, flash carts like the FXPak Pro will be able to utilize increased internal hardware to run Star Fox EX on the SNES proper.

The Super FX 3 will further enhance Star Fox EX. According to Kando, the new chip allows for “fewer wait states, more processing speed, more ROM space,” leading to an overall better performance. Considering the fact that going back to the original Star Fox after starting with Star Fox 64 can be an… experience, this is incredible news.

Moreover, it paves the way for the remaining Super FX games to get the same support. Though, admittedly, two of the greatest are already crossed off of the fairly short list, there.
