A few days ago, we told you that Star Trek 3 director Roberto Orci and William Shatner were discussing the idea of Shatner having a role in the latest Trek film. Apparently that’s not the case, as it was first denied by Shatner, via his Twitter…
Let’s talk ST. I don’t know anything about the current gossip. Nobody has contacted me. Right now it’s just rhetoric to cause hype.
…and then later by Orci himself (or a proxy; it’s hard to tell as this comes from the comments section of an article on TrekMovie):
Not in my interest to confirm or deny anything because it limits my options while maintaining my integrity as a truth teller.
The movie is not the movie till it is in the theater. Until then, everything is a rumor.
Ugh, “truth teller”? You couldn’t resist putting yourself on a pedestal for one day, could you Roberto? We know, 9/11 was an inside job, blah blah blah.
Anyway, I kind of see Orci’s point. If he says “Shatner is in the movie,” then he has to put Shatner in the movie, whether or not there’s a character well-suited to him; if he says “Shatner is not in the movie,” then Shatner’s out, even if there’s a character well-suited to him. But ultimately I think this is all smoke and mirrors; I believe Shatner will in Star Trek 3, and Orci is just taking a page from J.J. Abrams book, entitled How to Keep Absolutely Everything a Secret Even Though It Doesn’t Need to Be, Because No One Will be Excited for a New Star Trek or Star Wars Movie if They Know Even the Slightest Thing About It.
Thanks to The AV Club for the heads up.
