Network Crash Temporarily makes Visa Cards Useless in UK and Europe

Well, you could always use Discover.

It’s always bad when your credit card doesn’t work. It’s even worse when nobody else’s card works. And that’s what happened across Europe today, thanks to a Visa network crash.

But it didn’t just stop at Visa cards, either. MasterCard and American Express cards were also getting declined, thanks to the transactions being shuttled through Visa’s IT network.

Transactions from big to small became impossible, unless you were using cash. Which is why the one saving grace to the situation was that it was still possible for all cardholders to withdraw cash from ATMs.

Visa’s initial statement tweet was eventually followed up with an announcement from UK Finance; Britains payment firm trade association:

Visa is currently experiencing a service disruption which is preventing some Visa transactions in Europe from being processed. It is investigating the cause and acting as quickly as possible to resolve the situation. Visa is working with banks, building societies, merchant acquirers and card providers to return to a normal service and will provide regular updates.

Customers should check their bank, building society or card provider website or contact them with any queries.

Things are still a mess, and there’s not really any light at the end of the tunnel, yet. So, if you happen to be in Europe, remember: cash is king.
