Netflix has scored the streaming rights to the legendary comedy, Seinfeld starting in 2021. This could be a pretty big win for the company as more and more streaming platforms are launching and beginning to take chunks of subscribers from the company.
It should be noted that Netflix will be losing the streaming rights to two other comedy shows, with The Office leaving in 2021 and Friends departing sometime next year. Sure, these are all old show, and Seinfeld even older, but each has a strong viewer base that loves coming back again and again to watch. It’s been noted in recent reports that The Office is the most-watched show on Netflix, even when compared to its original programming.
In fact, the original content being produced by Netflix for the platform is underperforming. This means securing the rights to classic shows is becoming more and more important to the service, something other up and coming platforms seem to understand as they are also banking on old shows to help launch their platforms.
