Anime related properties seem to be popping up in the mainstream more and more these days. It’s refreshing to see this, even if my exposure to anime comes from Dragon Ball Z and my lovely friends that rave about all sorts of shows. It now seems that the popular series Death Note is being made into a live-action film with Netflix getting the rights.
For those not familiar with the series here is a brief synopsis:
“Light Yagami is a genius high school student who is about to learn about life through a book of death. When a bored shinigami, a God of Death, named Ryuk drops a black notepad called a Death Note, Light receives power over life and death with the stroke of a pen. Determined to use this dark gift for the best, Light sets out to rid the world of evil… namely the people he believes to be evil. Should anyone hold such power? The consequences of Light’s actions will set the world ablaze.”
The film was originally on the slate over at Warner Bros, but the studio has recently trimmed its portfolio to focus on its “tent-pole” films that include LEGO, Harry Potter, and DC Comics brands. The lesser known and marketable (by men in suits) Death Note film just didn’t make the cut.
In turn Netflix came in to pick up the film that is being hemmed by Adam Wingard (You’re Next, The Guest) and staring Nat Wolf (Paper Towns) and Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers). The film is currently set to begin production this June.
