What a shock.
In a move absolutely no one would see coming, Netflix has once again raised their subscription prices in the US.
Notably, Netflix claims to have gained 19 million subscribers over the holidays. At least some of that is likely attributed to their live programming move.
This is far from the first time the streaming monolith has raised prices. Most recently, they raised prices in 2023, alongside a crackdown on account sharing. They’ve naturally moved into live programming in an effort to sell more commercials, but it also seems to be a point of retention for their users.
From a statement the company gave on the price increase:
As we continue to invest in programming and deliver more value for our members, we will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix.
As for what the increase looks like:
- Standard plan with ads: $6.99/month → $7.99/month
- Standard subscription: $15.49/month → $17.99/month
- Premium Plan: $22.99/month → $24.99/month
- Adding an extra member: $7.99/month → $8.99/month
That said, adding an extra member to an advertising-based plan will remain at its current price: $6.99/month.
