Yes, they do, in fact, have games.
If you have a memory longer than the average Xwitter/Reddit user, chances are you may remember that Netflix actually includes access to free games for all subscribers via their mobile app. The problem, of course, is that accessing these games is a massive, obtuse, pain in the ass. I guess they thought a big draw would help more than streamlining the process by which you can play the damn things, though, because you can now play the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition through Netflix on mobile.
The trilogy naturally includes Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The announcement dropped on Tuesday and claims that the games are being “updated for mobile”, whatever that really means. Reception was mixed, because these are in fact the worst versions of these games you could play, despite running in a native HD resolution. Rockstar shuffled the project to relatively unknown studios, and the bare minimum was done to fix how broken these games were at launch. If you’re still interested, the announcement says that the games will be available on December 14th on App Store, Google Play, and via the Netflix Mobile App.
It’s not just Grand Theft Auto, though. Earlier in the month, Netflix announced a number of sizeable indie titles for their service as well; specifically Hades, Death’s Door, and a remaster of Jonathan Blow’s Braid, among others. They’re likely banking on this flood of games to help boost the number of users that play through Netflix, as the percentage of users actually using their account to play these games has consistently remained at less than 1%, just like it was last year.
