You know what this link leads to.
Well, it seems like all it took to bring the streaming giant down to Earth was pretty much a single year. Netflix has nixed password sharing and is even planning to place ads on their platform this year. Things can’t possibly get any worse for Netflix subscribers, can they?
Anyway, according to Deadline, Netflix is getting into live streaming. According to the report, it’s going to initially be constrained to unscripted shows and stand up specials. Think things like live competition shows (that could even afford a live vote from viewers) and stuff like Netflix is a Joke; you know, assuming it actually comes back.
On the other hand, that, uh, kinda sounds a lot like a premium cable channel. You know, that thing people bought into Netflix to avoid?
Now, to be totally fair, Netflix isn’t the first company to do this with their streaming app. Disney did it with Disney+ for the Oscar nominations. It still doesn’t inspire consumer confidence, though.
All that said, Netflix is in an unenviable position. Aside from the above-mentioned problems, they’ve just seen their first subscriber total drop in a decade, watched their stock prices plummet, and went through a round of layoffs (the bloggers in that case probably weren’t of high import, though more recent cuts are starting to bleed things). They’re probably in crisis mode, trying to see what sticks.
As of right now, there’s no set date for the implementation of live streaming on Netflix.
