Mortal Kombat Trilogy Remaster Was Cancelled Before It Really Started

Mortal Kombat

FINISH HIM!

There were many versions of the original Mortal Kombat trilogy. But none of them, when collected together, really hit the mark fans wanted them to.

Well, it seems there was a remaster in the works for the trilogy. According to an blog entry (now deleted; cached) by Blind Squirrel Games artist Danny Huynh, the developers were working on a high res remaster of the original games. This got as far as Huynh making mock-ups for menus and concepts before it got canned.

Notably, among the remastered graphics and UI stuff, there seems to have been plans for a new mode. The Krypt mode, as it’s dubbed in Huynh’s post, was supposedly a new way to play the original trilogy.

They never seemed to have settled on a name; some screens call it Mortal Kombat Kollection Online, others Mortal Kombat Remastered. Still, it might’ve been nice. That said, there’s no stated reason as to why the project was cancelled, so who knows?
