I was one of the early people online that gave Rhonda Rousey shit for being included in Mortal Kombat 11 as Sonya Blade. Come to find out on release that I was one-hundred percent correct as everyone that called me out has seemed to come to my side. She was terrible and wholly out of place among the cast of actual voice actors.
So why as I okay with some DJ that I’ve never heard of, with a strong Belgian accent, playing one of the two main stars of the series? Well, because he’s trying his hardest and doesn’t sound like he’s just reciting lines into a microphone. It’s not a great job, and taking over for Steve Blum is an uphill battle no one can win, but it’s fun.
But the real reason I’m fine with this is because Belgian DJ Dimitri Vegas isn’t taking over for Blum and instead just part of a skin, like with what happened to Jax in the last Mortal Kombat when he got his Predator skin.
Vegas isn’t just some random music guy getting random love from the team as he the person behind the music for the Mortal Kombat 11 launch trailer. This is a super nice way to give some thanks and should give him some serious street cred. This is Vegas Sub-Zero and not Sub-Zero. If Rousey was an MMA skin I would have been all for that too.
He’s giving the voice work his all and some of the lines come out pretty well all things considered. A Belgian Sub-Zero feel a bit weird though. Fans online seem to be digging the skin as well with many saying they will use it as a way to taunt opponents.
