Montreal Detective Pikachu Viewers Get Treated To La Llorona Instead

The screaming children were ironically apropos.

So, mistakes happen. And really, is there a bigger mistake for a theater to make than showing an R-rated horror movie to a theater packed full of kids there to see Detective Pikachu?

Well, that’s what happened at one Montreal theater. They accidentally ran The Curse of La Llorona, a horror film based on Mexican folklore of a mother who drowned her children, and as a ghost wanders around abducting lost children. Needless to say, Ryan Reynolds playing a fuzzy fictional rodent detective it ain’t.

And wouldn’t you know it? Ryan George, of Screen Rant’s Pitch Meeting, was in attendance. And he live tweeted the entire debacle.

See, trailers often correspond to the movie they’re running ahead of. If you’re in an R-rated film, you’re likely getting the slightly more violent trailers; doubly so with horror, where the other trailers are often other horror movies. This should’ve been the canary in the coalmine for the theater.

And then, La Llorona started playing. And according to George, that’s when several parents had had enough. in an interview with Gizmodo, he said:

As soon as the Annabelle Comes Home trailer ended, you could hear a few kids crying. When La Llorona started, it was pretty quiet in the theatre—everyone still thought it might still be Detective Pikachu.”

When the image of the mother drowning her kid showed up on screen, several people left the room to go warn the theatre staff.

To be fair, both films are distributed by Warner Bros. And to their credit, the theater did everything to make things right, directing everyone to a theater running Detective Pikachu, and apologizing for the mixup. But man, Annabelle, Chucky, and Joker? That’s one hell of a boner!
