Monster Prom – Review

Title: Monster Prom
Genre: Indie, Simulation
Developer: Beautiful Glitch
Publisher: Those Awesome Guys
Release Date: Apr 27, 2018

I’m not a fan of dating simulations. Over the years both friends and girlfriends have told me to try one game or another because it was more than just another boring dating sim; They were always wrong. At best you may end up with some visual novel with the same tired plot. I mention these things because Monster Prom is a dating sim in every way shape or form, but I adored it. I adored it so much that I went back to play it dozens of times because of how much silly fun the game is.

The story drops you into the shoes of one four different monsters and you are tasked with finding yourself a date to the senior prom. Yes, it pretty stock with most every other dating sim doing it too, but it’s the story where Monster Prom really shines. You have only three weeks to find a date from a number of monsters, each with their own unique style and storyline. In fact, each character that you can seduce has multiple storylines, as well as a few hidden ones!

During the game you choose your own adventure and build up your character through a number of stats. These can be improved by doing things like going to class, going gym class, partying, and so on. There is also a store that randomly appears in the game that allows you to buy items that you may need in seducing a certain monster, or to use in a future playthrough that will open up new events, dialogue options, and paths.

What’s really nice is the large amounts of dialouge and choices that you can make through each playthrough. Yes, there will be a few events that will pop up pretty regularly, but Monster Prom is really great when you experiment. Each character is a lot of fun and there is someone for everyone. You have the party girl, the mean girl, the jock, brainiac and so on. Many situations place multiple characters together which forces you to make hard choices.

Monster Prom also features some incredibly charming art and animations. The characters are gorgeous in their designs and really draw you in with everyone really standing out. The writing is where a game like this needs to be really strong to separate itself from the crowd, and Monster Prom does does in a really fun way. The writers throw all sorts of jokes and gags that’ll you’ll be laughing out loud on every playthrough.

It shoud be noted that there are some very adult situations in Monster Prom. Not of these are of a sexual nature (it’s “mostly” all PG13 here), but the writing is very adult. Polly the poltergeist for example is simply beyond the pail in terms of mannerisms, but it fits her character. But if that’s not your cup of tea each character is written very differently so there is something for everyone. This isn’t like most anime dating sim where everyone is lewd for no reason.

There are over 1000 situations hundreds of events that really encourage multiple playthroughs of Monster Prom. And with all of them leading to a different outcome you could be playing this one for quite a long time. Add in the fact that monsters like monsters, you can seduce any gender as any gender, leading to some really fun interactions. The game will only run you about $12, and for that you are getting a lot of replay value.

Monster Prom also works really nicely in how everything is set up. The game doesn’t feature a save feature, but it really isn’t a problem as there are a few game modes to enjoy. The basic is a 30 minute mode that let’s you run through the game quickly, or you can try the 60 minute version that lets you take your time. The longer run will let you really experiment and find more interactions and events because of the added length.

But the one thing that Monster Prom has over most other dating sims is that you can play it in a multiplayer mode. There is both a couch co-op and online modes where the other player(s) get the chance to impact the game.

Up to four players can have a go together and it actually makes for a nice little party game when you have some friends over for the evening. There’s just so much to love about Monster Prom that it has entirely changed my view on dating sims.

Monster Prom is simply a lot of fun backed by some really great art and writing. We can easily recommend this title if you love dating sims, or if you are a fan of witty writing and lots of laughs.

“Monster Prom is a monstrous good time!”

Final Score:

4/5
