Microstoft Seals 10-Year Deal To Bring Call of Duty To The Switch

Call of Duty

Or, probably, its successor.

While the acquisition of Activision Blizzard is still ongoing, Microsoft hasn’t sat on their laurels. That said, the back and forth between Microsoft and Sony is also far from settled, with no word from Sony on what they’ll do about the proposed 10-year deal to keep Call of Duty on Sony platforms. That said, Nintendo seems to have considered the offer in question fair, because they’ve taken it.

The deal would see Call of Duty on Nintendo systems for the first time in roughly a decade. Granted, the relative power of the Switch compared to the current Xbox and PlayStation offerings might mean that only certain games would see ports. Still, with a potential Switch successor on the horizon, there’s no saying what Call of Duty games will or won’t be available on Nintendo platforms in the future.

Phil Spencer did, however, note in a Washington Post interview that games would by necessity need to be selected carefully to ensure performance. And also, that things launch simultaneously.

You can imagine if [the deal] closed on that date, starting to do development work to make that happen would likely take a little bit of time. Once we get into the rhythm of this, our plan would be that when [a Call of Duty game] launches on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, that it would also be available on Nintendo at the same time.

When asked if he thought there would be any difficulties bringing CoD to Nintendo’s platform, Spencer noted their current deal regarding Minecraft, and said:

Minecraft and Call of Duty are different games. But from how you get games onto Nintendo, how you run a development team that is targeting multiple platforms, that’s experience we have.

That said, the Microsoft/Activision Blizzard merger isn’t sealed just yet. Assuming all goes well, it should be wrapped up in June 2023. That said, with the enormity of the merger, it would be a bit optimistic to expect that date to be absolute.
