Butterfly in the sky
I can go twice as high
As of April 2nd, the Microsoft Store no longer offers books. Which, yes, means that you can no longer buy, sell or rent ebooks on the platform.
Granted, if you’ve invested into the ecosystem, you’re not totally out of luck. Purchases and rentals will remain available until early July; after that, though, and you will no longer have access to them. Even then, you’re not left in the cold; they’ve stated that they’ll be offering refunds to anyone that purchased something from the Books category. The details of how to claim that refund will be sent to users via email.
As for why they’re removing books from the store, their official line is that they’re “attempting to streamline the strategic focus of the Microsoft Store”. There’s also the possibility that the next Windows Edge update (1903 as it’s called) may have something to do with it. Regardless, you might want to keep an eye on your email fro that refund info.
