Talk about Skype
It’s likely been a long time coming, but Microsoft has made the decision to shut down Skype.
Once a fairly popular internet voice chat service, Microsoft bought Skype 14 years ago for $8.5 billion. After which the service slowly slid into irrelevance thanks to feature bloat and all of the usual things you expect from Microsoft owning something. There was a user spike during the COVID pandemic, but that, like many other user spikes during the pandemic, was not to last.
Microsoft seems to have chosen to put their eggs in the Microsoft Teams basket, meaning it was only a matter of time for Skype to ride into the sunset.
Skype will shut down on May 5th of this year.
