Simply due to the range of machines its available on, Google’s Chrome is practically king of the hill nowadays. Which places Microsoft’s Edge browser somewhere further back from the limelight. Which means that, for Edge to be successful, it needs features that will be a draw. To that end, Microsoft announced that Edge would be getting a host of Xbox Gaming features.
The new gaming homescreen is inspired by the Xbox UI, and puts it all at your fingertips: news, game guides, live streams, game highlights, tournaments, and upcoming and newly released games. To get to all of it, you need to hit the “Gaming” heading on the Edge homescreen, or simply select Games from the Edge options menu. What’s more, signing in with your Xbox account will get you Xbox content such as game suggestions, as well as easy access to the Xbox Cloud Gaming library. It also grants access to free casual games, such as Microsoft Solitaire, Microsoft Jewel, Microsoft Mahjong and the exclusive Microsoft Edge Surf Game, among others.
In addition, another feature that actually dropped November of last year is Clarity Boost, which Corporate Vice President Liat Ben-Zur describes thusly:
Clarity Boost is a spatial upscaling enhancement that makes streaming games look clearer and sharper while playing in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 and 11. It uses a set of client-side scaling improvements to improve the visual quality of the video stream. Clarity Boost allows you to enjoy the most advanced games on the market and experience amazing graphics right from Microsoft Edge whether you are on your high-end PC gaming rig or your tablet.

In addition to all of this Edge is actually being tooled to not hog resources while you’re gaming. Thanks to the Efficiency mode, when you’re in game, Edge will reduce the amount of resources it’s using to help maintain a smooth gaming experience. And when you’re done with your game, it returns everything to its normal state. Efficiency mode can be enabled under Edge’s System and Performance tab.
As for whether this will get people to switch over to Edge instead of banging on with Chrome, the cards will fall as they may. The good news is that these new features have already rolled out. More importantly, the Xbox integration is probably going to do a lot to boost those numbers. It is, after all, way more than Chrome does if you’re deep into having Gaming everything.
