Meta Ruins Threads By Begining Testing Ads On The Platform

Select users in US and Japan will start being fed ads on their Threads account

Threads is Meta’s (Facebook’s) attempt to take on Twitter when that platform was starting to piss off just about everyone. How people thought Meta would be any better as that platform is equally as hated for being terrible is beyond me. Still, a number of users migrated over to Threads, or at least gave it a try to see if it would be a good alternative to Twitter (now X).

I’ve used Threads on and off, mostly because it’s an integrated part of Instagram, the social media platform that I spend most of my time on. But there was a hint of possibility with Threads as, at the very least, healthy competition to something like Twitter. One thing that really felt nice about the platform was its distinctive lack of ads. It’s like those golden early days of social media when it was all about sharing content.

But this is Meta we’re talking about. You knew it was a matter of time before Zuckerberg would slam ads down users throats to save his dying platform(s). Meta is launching ads in what it calls a “small test” of ad for select user in the United States and Japan. Users will see featured ads from select “brands” soon if their account has been selected for testing.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri stated that:

That’s a load of bullshit if you’ve had the pleasure of experience Facebook over the last few years. Even Instagram serves a bunch of stupid ads that only serve to ruin the experience, especially with video that tricks you into swiping down only to be taken offsite someplace. Threads will be no different as Meta states it will be implementing its already builr ads platform into it.

Mosseri went on to state:

“We’ll closely monitoring this test before scaling it more broadly, with the goal of getting ads on Threads to a place where they are as interesting as organic content.”

But this is all about scaling. Meta has some 300 millions users on Threads and Zuck really wants that cash from them. So, get ready to see your feeds inundated with strange ads, political oddities, and comments filled with “nice try Diddy” here in the very near future.
