Numbers that make Thanos look like a little bitch
Look, all games eventually sunset, having their playerbase taper off as they ease into a reduced number of active players over time. Losing 96% is unusual for a game that came out earlier in the year, much less two months go. And that game is Marvel’s Avengers.
October saw a decrease of about 87%, but November put it into the range of 96% since release. Over the weekend, only a couple thousand players were playing the game online. It’s really only averaged less than 1,000 active players over the course of the month of November. And while the console numbers aren’t known, it’s reasonable to assume that they’re comparable, if not similar. Even back in October, the drop in players caused matchmaking issues.
The reasons seem to range from bugs and technical issues, to exception taken against the graphics and character designs, to the story… which is apparently somewhat divisive for placing so much emphasis on Kamala Khan and (allegedly) killing off Captain America (how many times is that, now?).
Crystal Dynamics reported that the PS5 version of the game would be delayed, as well as a $50 million loss in the quarter Marvel’s Avengers launched.
I, uh, hope you appreciate this article, because my source was godawful. I had to sift through that article and the comments section just to give up and go to steamcharts to find some numbers. Why did I work with such a terrible source? Well, gonna go with gambler’s fallacy on that one. apropos of nothing, but I’m pretty sure the comics industry is in the toilet because it won’t give people the bread and circuses they want. Though they did finally give us the return of Snowflame (the cocaine-powered villain), so every cloud has a silver lining (or a cocaine-lining), eh?
