Marvel announces new Avengers directors, plus some casting news

Okay, we got big news and slightly less big news. Wow, great opening. Anyway, the big news – which Marvel didn’t hype, like, at all – is that Joss Whedon will not be returning to direct Avengers: Infinity War. Stepping into the director’s chair – or chairs, rather – will be Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo (who will also direct Captain America: Civil War).

I’m beyond excited by this. The Russos showed an uncanny understanding of what makes Captain America work with The Winter Soldier, and managed to turn a huge summer tentpole release into a deft political thriller. Plus they got Robert Redford to say “Hail Hydra,” which has gotta earn them some points.

Next up we have some casting news, concerning – surprise! Doctor Strange. Someone at Marvel has a huge hard-on for a property that the average moviegoer has never heard of. That’s the only way to explain the fact that Doctor Strange has been in the news for months now. Will they shut up and cast someone already? Anyway, Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds, Rush) has joined the cast as the film’s main villain. (Bruhl will also appear in Civil War, but in a smaller capacity.)

dbNaturally, Marvel isn’t saying anything about who Bruhl is playing, but rampant speculation has already begun, so if you’re even a casual comics fan, be prepared to get asked who Baron Zemo and Baron Mordo are.

Honestly, the best thing about all these obscure properties being adapted is that it means we’re inching closer and closer to a Beta Ray Bill movie.

brbThanks to Uproxx for the heads up.
