According to Game Informer, the upcoming Mario Kart Tour for smart devices will be free to start. Which is Nintendo shorthand for a range of possibilities. It could be like Super Mario Run, where the bulk of the game is locked behind a one-time transaction.
Or it could be like Fire Emblem: Heroes, where there is a gacha model that doles out shiny new kart parts. Or even like Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, where new things are kept behind a premium currency that it’s much faster to buy than earn.
The one thing that is known is that, after Nintendo has finished developing and launching Mario Kart Tour, DeNA will take over the day-to-day operations for the game. Which is a pretty good fit; they’re known for running a number of games fairly well, including Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (even if the pull rates are bull).
Mario Kart Tour has no release set in stone. Nintendo has, however, stated that the game will be live by the end of March 2018.
