Marines Defeat AI Security With Metal Gear Solid Cardboard Box Trick

EYAAA!!! CRAB AI BATTLE!

AI has been a hot topic recent of late. But for once, the news regarding an AI isn’t a total downer. Because, as it turns out, a group of Marines were able to dunk on one meant to detect human beings by doing some crazy feats. Including taking a page out of Solid Snake’s playbook à la Metal Gear Solid.

Author Paul Scharre recently released a book titled Four Battlegrounds: Power in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, which details the global AI race happening right now. And one story, which got shared on Twitter, grabbed everyone’s attention.

Metal Gear Solid

As the book details, the Marines did a number of incredibly silly things to avoid detection; tow of them just somersaulted the entire way, one pretended to be a tree, and two decided that Solid Snake’s favorite fallback would be a pretty fun way to beat the algorithm — and it did. They were apparently giggling about it the entire time.

These method all worked because the AI was trained to look for a walking human soldier; not moving trees, cardboard boxes, or even humans somersaulting their way through the world (as you do). Oddly enough, The man (“Phil”) uses Bugs bunny as an analogy for their cardboard box prank; guess he never played a Metal Gear game.

Regardless, there’s no exact date given for the test, so it could have been a much more primitive AI failing, as opposed to the more recent AI’s driving people batty. But still, much like Juggalo makeup fooling these things, there’s likely a non-zero number of ways to fool AI software. It’s just a matter of finding them.
