Mad Catz Rises from the Ashes

Mad Catz

Mad Catz is dead, long live Mad Catz.

When you think of Mad Catz, you probably remember that impossibly brittle and inherently breakable peripheral you got that one time. Later on, PC people knew them for their impossibly edgy gaming peripherals that had driver and laser issues. And with that bankruptcy last year, you probably thought you’d heard the last of them.

Well guess who’s back? Mad Catz. And they’ve got some new stuff this time around. And the promise that they’re coming into the market lean and mean. So you know what, Mad Catz? Surprise me. I’d love it if you came back an underdog and really knocked my socks off.

The first of the products they plan to show at CES is the R.A.T. Air. This update of the R.A.T.9 features wireless via the USB mouse pad (I get the feeling I’m the only one who’d be a fan of that). Though it also has the option of running through USB if you’d prefer.

They’ll also be showing their Strike 4 mechanical keyboard. That has an aluminum frame and RGB lighting. Also on the docket is their Freq 4 gaming headset, made with 40mm neodymium drivers, swappable earbuds and oxygen free copper cable. Which is pretty much a waste of a more expensive material (oxygen free copper cable), since that only really matters with industrial applications.

Their designs seem to have had some of the edginess dialed back too, while still retaining the profile. Mad Catz seems determined to make a good run of it this time around. So we’ll see what there is to see when CES finally rolls around. Just, uh, hope they put more quality into the plastic of their peripherals this time around. And, you know, the guts. Just, do everything better.
