I’ll give you three guesses why.
So, the script for that live-action Powerpuff Girls show on The CW was leaked. And almost immediately after that, the pilot they shot was canned. And as a consequence, it was not picked up for the channel’s 2021-2022 slate. But don’t worry; the same cast and crew are coming back to do a second pilot that will address the issues that were raised upon the viewing of the first.
Per The Wrap, CW CEO Mark Pedowitz said the following:
“We believe in the cast and in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier] and [executive producer Greg Berlanti] and studio Warner Bros. In this case, the pilot didn’t work,” Pedowitz explained. “Because we see enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot. Tonally, it might have felt a little too campy, and didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might have felt. You learn things when you test things out. We felt, ‘Let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board.’ This is a powerful property, it engaged a lot of interest, and we want to get it right.”

But you’re probably wondering why this didn’t get picked up in the first place, and you’re not taking that “too campy” explanation since YouTube is littered with Riverdale cringe videos. Especially since the leaked script was so bad, a lot of people thought it was fake. Well, even if I had the script, I couldn’t reasonably share it, since the thread that leaked it in the first place got claimed (as is the company’s right). But hey, JLongbone did a runthrough of it, so I’m off the hook!
