Leonard Nimoy documentary ‘For The Love of Spock’ opens September 9th

For The Love Of Spock is a documentary film about the life of Star Trek’s Mr. Spock as well as that of Leonard Nimoy, the actor who played Spock for almost fifty years. The project started out as a collaboration between Leonard and his son, director Adam Nimoy, and was intended to help celebrate the upcoming fifty-year anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series. The project initially focused solely on the creation and evolution of Mr. Spock and the impact of Spock on Star Trek fans as well as on popular culture.

After Leonard passed away in February 2015, Adam decided to broaden the focus of the film to include his father’s life and legacy. For The Love Of Spock draws on film clips, still photographs and interviews to paint a complete picture of Leonard’s artistic career with an emphasis on his most famous alter ego. Interviews of friends, family and colleagues include William Shatner and the original Star Trek cast as well as Zachary Quinto and the new crew of the Starship Enterprise. The film also contains interviews with filmmaker JJ Abrams and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.

As production on For The Love Of Spock continued, it became clear there was a third story that needed to be told; Adam’s personal experience growing up with Leonard and Spock. To this end, the younger Nimoy considers the ups and downs of being the son of a celebrity. This candid look at his relationship with his father includes their periods of estrangement as well as the events that finally brought them back together.
