Lenovo Debuts The World’s First Foldable PC

The raw power of origami in your hands.

Foldable screens are definitely something everybody has been racing to develop. And Lenovo is the first to offer one on a laptop with the ThinkPad X1 Fold.

The ThinkPad X1 Fold features a flexible, LG-made 13.3-inch OLED display, making it the first of its kind. Notably, the keyboard is not integral as is typical in laptops; rather, it’s separate, making it more akin to a tablet. To support it’s use in a variety of environments, it has a built-in folding stand. And if that’s not enough stand for you, they also offer a a separate, designated stand for $24, which keeps all of the ports accessible.

But this is a bendable PC. So, if necessary, you can fold it in half in the normal laptop form-factor, and either use the on-screen keyboard, or place the physical keyboard on top and tap away. And on top of that, the X1 Fold also features stylus input and Windows Inking. Finally, whenever Windows 10X (the version made for Microsoft’s own planned folding laptops) releases, they plan on offering support for that on the X1 Fold.

Aside from that, Lenovo states that the X1 Fold has passed the usual durability tests you expect nowadays. There’s also the fact that they actually incorporated the clever design work into it. The silicone borders bend with it, preventing dust from getting into the screen. The way it folds leaves a gap so as not to damage the screen (*cough*). Moreover, that gap? Fits the Bluetooth keyboard perfectly when everything’s folded up.

So there are the pros, what are the cons? Well, the keyboard features a really small touchpad. Which winds up being less of a problem considering the whole thing is practically a touchscreen Oh, yeah, and the sticker shock; the ThinkPad X1 Fold will set you back $2500. Still, it’s new technology, so that’s not unexpected. The real test is getting them out into the wild and seeing how they do.
