Sunrise is involved.
Anime Expo had a Sunrise panel, and Sunrise President and CEO Yasuo Miyakawa had a special announcement for those present. In conjunction with Legendary, Gundam is headed to the big screen. In live-action, to boot.
On the one hand, live-action anime has an unbelievably fucking terrible track record in the west. But on the other hand, this is Legendary we’re talking about. With the right people behind it, it just might work.
There aren’t any details on the plot or anything, yet. The panel had a teaser trailer and a poster, and that was it. Will it be it’s own thing, or an adaptation? Will it be Universal Century, or is it going to take the other path to Gundam goodness? Can we get a villain that has a plan that isn’t stupid? Who knows?!
I do, however, expect it to keep to its roots. I expect an anti-war story that decides it’s going to make war look super fucking cool so that you’re really left with a mixed message. And, oh yeah, everyone dies in the end. Yoshiyuki Tomino didn’t get the nickname “Kill ’em all Tomino” for nothing, you know.
Also, if it’s Universal Century, I’d fully expect some Newtype fuckery.
