It’s all that damn, dirty PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS fault, according to them.
In the land of games, sometimes you roll the dice. The ground is littered with the corpses of competitive shooters that didn’t find their niche. And Nexon just added LawBreakers to the heap. According to their Q3 2017 Earnings Report:
Our results in North America in the third quarter were below our outlook, mainly due to the sales from LawBreakers being below our expectations.
They go on to blame part of that on PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS success in the market:
LawBreakers is a unique FPS developed for core users. We had very high expectations for its launch; however, the timing of its launch turned out to be unfortunate, specifically the blockbuster PC online game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds came out right about the same time, making the market environment very tough for first-person shooters in general and for LawBreakers.
According to the report, LawBreakers was responsible for the bulk of their losses that quarter. You can’t exactly pin all of that on PUBG, though, since it hit early access before LawBreakers was even available. Not to mention the fact that overlap between the two is a little difficult to judge. Nonetheless, the game has, apparently, been written off, which is something of a death knell. things that have been officially written off no longer incur losses, and in the case of games, can either mean they’re sold or abandoned. It’s hard to tell which of the latter is the case as of yet, though.
