“Then crazy learner’s-permit-girl gave me a ride to Babbages. What?! They don’t got no TurboGrafx Games?!”
The PC Engine was a pretty big deal when it hit the scene in Japan, where in its release year, it outsold the Famicom. Though it was somewhat less so in the West, where it went by the name TurboGrafx-16. Still, there were quite a few gems on the system that have stood the test of time well. And Konami is betting you’ll agree, because they’re releasing a mini version of the console loaded with some of its finest titles.
As far as creature comforts are concerned, it has what you’ve come to expect. A quicksave feature is baked in, so that you don’t have to do what everyone used to do and leave the thing on and paused while you go do something else, praying the power doesn’t go out. It’s also got HDMI output by default, with a number of modes meant to replicate the the CRT experience or give you the cleanest look possible. There will even be a (separately sold) multitap, so you can run games with up to 5 players.
But what you’re interested in is the games. And they know better than to tip their hand, only having a small selection on display at the moment:
- Alien Crush
- Dungeon Explorer
- New Adventure Island
- Ninja Spirit
- R-Type
- Ys Book I & II
…with more on the way. There aren’t any other details right now, though; neither price nor release date are available. But, considering what some TurboGrafx games can go for in used and incomplete condition, this may be a godsend for fans of the console.
