I’ll take “things no one saw coming” for $800.

It’s not every day that an over 3-decade-old game suddenly gets a revival. And yet, that’s exactly what’s happening with Konami’s GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon.

The original GetsuFumaDen was release for the Famicom in Japan in 1987. And, while it was never officially released in the West, it’s influence can be found in other games. It was, after all, said to inspire the format of the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game on the NES, particularly in the nature of having overhead, sidescrolling, and behind-the-back segments. And you might well see elements akin to Castlevania II, Zelda II and The Goonies 2 in it. The original game starred Getsu Fuma, on a quest to recover the swords of his fallen brothers and defeat the demon lord, Ryukotsuki.

In the new game, which Konami bills as an ukiyo-e-inspired roguelite hack-and-slash game, and once again stars Getsu Fuma. Per the summary for the game over on Steam:

It has been 1000 years since the first leader of the Getsu clan defeated the demon lord Ryukotsuki, driving demons back into Hell and restoring order to the world. But when Ryukotsuki abruptly returns and all hell breaks loose, it falls unto a new hero to rise against the threat.

GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is headed to Steam Early Access this year (May 13th), and to Nintendo Switch in 2022. Coincidentally, Early Access players will get access to the original game on Steam absolutely free.

According to GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon producer Shin Murato:

Having an Early Access period gives us a great opportunity to build a community for GetsuFumaDen and ensure the game is as strong as possible. Throughout this period, we want to utilise user feedback and foster an active discussion to increase the quality of the game. We will work very closely with our community to help bring this game to life through content review, bug fixes, and balancing. Our focus is on Early Access at the moment; we will share more details about Nintendo Switch in the future.”

Shin Murato, producer, GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon

Working closely with KONAMI and bringing GetsuFumaDen to life is a thrilling project for us. We look forward to entering Early Access and actively working in partnership with the community on a title that speaks to our passion about design, visuals, and story. We’re excited to hear the community’s feedback with a goal to shape and evolve the game as we move forward in development.
