Kodak used to be giants in the industry. They were the kings of photography with their print technologies, cameras, and film, but as time and technology moved forward, Kodak just wasn’t fast enough to stay in the game. Growing up with the brand heavily ingrained in the culture (who remembers Kodak picture spots at theme parks and tourist attractions), the once mighty giant is now something considered retro in the eyes of the younger demographic. Sad really, as is wasn’t all that long ago, before smartphones, that almost everyone had a Kodak brand digital camera.
So maybe it’s no surprise that Kodak is clawing itself out of the grave of obsolescence with the announcement of a smartphone. Granted, Kodak itself won’t be producing the new phone itself, instead handing off production to Bullitt, an English company most known for its work on the rugged Caterpillar phones. News on the phone itself is pretty hard to come by at the moment as Kodak is no doubt planning a reveal of some kind at CES in January. We will hopefully have the chance to get our hands on the unit at the show to give you more details.
Here’s to hoping that Kodak can break into the cluttered smartphone market with something targeted to the photography nuts of the world. Being someone who uses their smartphone for browsing the web and taking pictures, this could be something that would interest me. I’d much rather have a capable smartphone that takes real pictures over one that allows me to play terrible mobile game any-day. We just hope that the mock-up image above isn’t the final design for the unit as it is not the prettiest looking thing around.
